The surname Byron comes from an Old English place name meaning 'at the byres' or 'at the cow sheds' (from Old English 'bȳre', meaning cow shed). The title 'Baron Byron' was created in 1643 for Sir John Byron, an ancestor of the poet. George Gordon Byron inherited the title in 1798 at age 10, becoming the 6th Baron Byron of Rochdale.
