Etymology

English (American), after a person's surname

The city was named after Jonathan Dayton (1760–1824), an American politician from New Jersey who signed the U.S. Constitution and served as Speaker of the House. Despite giving the city its name, he never actually lived in Ohio. The settlement was founded in 1796 by a group of land speculators who admired Dayton, and the name was officially adopted when the city was incorporated in 1805.
