All three adjectives describe branches of Earth science, but each focuses on a different set of phenomena. Geological relates to the solid rocks, minerals, and the Earth's long-term structural history — for example, a geological map shows rock types and fault lines. Seismological narrows to earthquakes and the movement of energy through the Earth's crust. Meteorological deals specifically with the atmosphere, weather, and climate. Geophysical is the broadest of the four: it combines the study of the Earth's interior (gravity, magnetic field, heat flow), its surface (ocean currents, land movements), and processes above the surface (atmospheric physics). A geophysical study might investigate how changes in the planet's magnetic field relate to shifts in deep-Earth structure, which none of the other three terms would cover on their own.
Etymology
Formed from two Greek elements: geo- (γῆ, gē, 'Earth') and physiká (φυσικά, 'natural things'), which passed into Latin as physica ('natural science'). The combined term 'geophysics' was coined in the late 1800s as scientists began treating the Earth itself as a physical system with measurable forces, fields, and internal structures. The adjective form 'geophysical' followed soon after.
