partition
Synonym discussion
Sense: noun/1
For noun sense 1, a partition is a divider placed inside a larger room or building. Divider is a close everyday match, but it can also mean a small object used in drawers or folders. Screen often suggests something lighter, movable, or partly see-through, while partition can be fixed in place. Wall is broader and usually suggests a stronger, more permanent structure. Panel can name one flat piece of material, but it does not always imply that the piece separates spaces. In an office, glass partitions may divide desks; at home, a folding screen may give privacy; and a brick wall usually forms the room itself, not just an inner division.
Etymology
Partition came into English through Old French from Latin partitio, a noun built from partiri, meaning 'divide into parts'. The noun kept the idea of a division or something that creates one, and the verb later developed from that noun in English.
